Wally Caruana and Michael Reid have established the partnership Caruana & Reid Fine Art (2002) to provide advice on purchasing and collecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and to source works of art for sale to collectors. A feature of Caruana & Reid’s activities, is up to four highly sifted, screened and curated Indigenous art exhibitions—held at Elizabeth Bay each year.
The primary intention of these viewings is to introduce clients to Aboriginal art through a range of canvases, bark paintings, works on paper and three-dimensional objects. The works are sourced from a selection of the best art-making communities across Australia: from the central and western deserts, the Kimberley, to Arnhem Land, the Top End and beyond. Over the course of an exhibition—or indeed over the year—clients have the opportunity to discuss the artworks and other aspects of Aboriginal art. The relaxed atmosphere of the gallery allows clients to soak in the works of art, ask questions and gain a deeper appreciation of the world of Aboriginal art.
Exhibitions normally include a range of works in size, materials and price brackets, featuring artists with long established reputations as well as mid-career artists and (this is where it can get particularly exciting from our point of view) up and coming talents. It must be remembered that an emerging Aboriginal artist may well be into his or hers 60s or 70s, it is just that they may not have made art publicly before.
While most of the work that passes through Caruana & Reid is acrylic painting on canvas, we also present bark paintings and sculpture in natural materials such as painted ceremonial poles (known as dupun or larrakitj) from eastern Arnhem Land. In each case advice can be provided on conservation and sound methods of display, storage and the consolidation of older works.
