Gregor Kregar

Sculptor Gregor Kregar possesses boundless skill spanning across medium, subject matter, scale and intent. He relishes the chance to question existed meanings of familiar objects, by stripping away our preconceived and habitual knowledge of sometimes kitsch or domestic objects.

There is a sense of obsession and consumption with Kregar’s work that is often the result of repetition and flawless craftsmanship. His arduous, technically proficient objects mimic the manufactured and send a cautionary message of greed and progress in an irreversible capitalist age.

Born in Slovenia, Gregor now calls New Zealand home. He has used his adopted homeland with such acute understanding that an outdoor installation in 2003, using live sheep wearing carefully crafted woolen jumpers seemed perfectly a part of the landscape.

Recent work examines futuristic sculptural constructions, which seem to organically transform and reflect their surrounds, twist the sense of space whereby our interaction can become distorted, Kregar becomes master of activating space by changing visual perspective as the viewer instinctively moves around the pieces.
Mirror polished stainless steel gnomes look to be liquid mercury and possess magical morphing powers stand guard to the mythical world.

Gregor's work entitled piercing the clouds will be showing at the Tin Sheds gallery , Sydney from 21 June – 12 July as part of the Sydney Biennale 2008.
